What a small business website actually costs in India in 2026
Website Development Cost in India 2027: 3 Quotes, Decoded

Website Development Cost in India 2027: 3 Quotes, Decoded
Say you run a dental clinic in Pune, a CA practice in Indore or a coaching institute in Kota, and three website quotes are sitting in your WhatsApp: ₹12,000 from a freelancer, ₹45,000 from a local agency and ₹1.5 lakh from a bigger agency that calls its work "custom". That's a 12x spread for what sounds like one job. The honest answer to website development cost in India is that those three numbers are not prices for the same thing.
The bigger difference is usually not the launch price. It's what each quote charges you again in year two, and who owns the site when you want to leave. Hosting advertised at ₹69 a month renews at ₹289 on Hostinger India's own pricing page. A ₹1 domain is a first-year offer. And no SSL certificate issued today can be valid for more than 200 days.
This guide decodes all three quotes line by line. It covers what a theme site, a hand-coded site and an online store include, what renews every year and at what rupee figure, where GST applies, who owns the domain and the code, and eight questions to send every vendor. Every price below was checked on 28 Oct 2026 and links to its source.
What changed since the 13 Sep 2026 version of this guide
If you read this page in September, here is what's different:
- Hostinger cut two promo rates, not the renewals. Premium went from ₹149 to ₹139 a month, Unlimited from ₹249 to ₹199. Renewals stayed at ₹449 and ₹649, so the year-two jump got bigger.
- The ₹1 .com needs a three-year term on Hostinger. On its own it renews at ₹1,499 a year.
- Let's Encrypt dated its next steps: 64-day certificates from 10 Feb 2027, 45-day from 16 Feb 2028.
- .in domains need registrant e-KYC, and unverified ones are suspended.
- Added: the .IN Registry's wholesale price, GST codes, two more agency bands and our website cost calculator.
- Removed: figures we could no longer check on the vendor's own page today: one agency's bands (page gone), website-builder rupee prices, a third-party GoDaddy .in figure and theme and page-builder dollar prices.
- Unchanged: our published price for a custom website, from ₹9,999 one-time.
Website development cost in India: what agencies publish
Start with what the market says about itself. These are bands agencies and hosts publish on their own blogs. They're useful as a sanity check. They are not survey data.
- Mayank Digital Labs (reviewed 9 Aug 2026): landing page ₹5,000–20,000; basic 5–10 page site ₹15,000–50,000; WordPress site ₹30,000–80,000; eCommerce ₹40,000–2,00,000; custom application ₹1.5–5 lakh+; maintenance ₹2,000–10,000 a month.
- Zethic (12 Jun 2026): template site ₹10,000–30,000; basic site ₹30,000–80,000; CMS business site ₹80,000–2,00,000; corporate site ₹2–6 lakh; eCommerce ₹80,000–8 lakh+.
- Hostinger's own tutorial (26 Feb 2026): freelancer ₹10,000–1,00,000; agency-built business site ₹50,000–1,50,000; agency eCommerce ₹1.5–4 lakh+.
Your ₹12k, ₹45k and ₹1.5 lakh quotes all fit inside those bands, which is why the bands can't help you choose. What actually moves the price:
- How it's made: a bought theme with your logo, a page builder, or code written for your business.
- Pages and content: how many, and who writes the text and shoots the photos.
- Features: booking, a catalogue, payments, a WhatsApp button, forms that reach you.
- What's bundled into year one: promo hosting, a ₹1 domain, a "paid SSL", a maintenance contract.
- GST: 18% on a ₹45,000 quote is ₹8,100. Ask whether it's "plus GST".
Small business website price: three quotes, decoded
Stay with the hypothetical clinic. When the owner asks each vendor what's inside, say the answers go like this. The ₹12,000 freelancer is building a WordPress theme site on promo shared hosting. The ₹45,000 agency's "custom design" is a premium theme plus a page-builder plugin. The ₹1,50,000 agency is writing the site from scratch and bundling a 12-month annual maintenance contract (AMC). None of the three lists year-two costs or says whose name the domain and hosting account will be in.
Here's the same thing laid out like for like:
| ₹12,000 freelancer | ₹45,000 agency | ₹1,50,000 agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it usually is | WordPress theme, promo hosting, ₹1 or free domain | Premium theme + page-builder plugin | Code written from scratch + 12-month AMC |
| If it's "plus GST" | ₹14,160 | ₹53,100 | ₹1,77,000 |
| Renews every year | Hosting at renewal rate, domain, paid plugins | Same, plus theme and builder licences, often billed in dollars | Hosting (often cloud), domain, AMC renewal |
| Renews at (sourced) | Hostinger Single ₹3,468/yr or Premium ₹5,388/yr; .in ₹625–899/yr | Same hosting and domain, plus licence renewals at the vendor's current price | Hostinger Cloud Startup ₹1,599/mo; AMC at whatever the agency sets |
| Who owns domain, hosting, code? | Ask: often the freelancer's account | Ask: often the agency's account | Ask: code ownership must be in the contract |
Two things jump out. The ₹12k and ₹45k quotes run on the same kind of hosting, so the extra ₹33,000 buys design time and a licence stack that renews in dollars. The ₹1.5 lakh quote may be the only genuinely custom one, but its year-two cost is whatever the AMC renewal says, and the quote doesn't say.
Website cost in India, year 1 vs year 2: what renews every year
This is the part cheap quotes leave out, and it's why people search "website renewal charges" after the first bill arrives.
Hosting. From Hostinger India's pricing page, checked 28 Oct 2026, on a 48-month term:
| Plan | Promo rate | Paid upfront | Renews at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | ₹69/mo | ₹3,312 | ₹289/mo (₹3,468/yr) |
| Premium | ₹139/mo | ₹6,672 | ₹449/mo (₹5,388/yr) |
| Unlimited | ₹199/mo | not listed here | ₹649/mo (₹7,788/yr) |
| Cloud Startup | ₹599/mo | not listed here | ₹1,599/mo (₹19,188/yr) |
The page doesn't say whether these include GST. Renewal runs 3.2x to 4.2x the promo rate on the shared plans.
Domain. Hostinger lists .in at ₹1 for year one, then ₹899 a year, and .com at ₹1 only with a three-year term, then ₹1,499. Domain India lists .in at ₹575 to register and ₹625 to renew, and .com at ₹1,150 both ways, plus 18% GST. Underneath all of them, the .IN Registry's wholesale tariff is ₹500 per domain-year for a second-level .in (₹400 for .co.in). So a ₹625–899 retail renewal is registrar margin on a ₹500 floor. If a vendor bills your .in renewal at several times that, the rest is their margin.
The year-1 vs year-2 view per tier, using only those figures:
| Tier | Year 1 | Year 2 onwards |
|---|---|---|
| Theme site (₹12k quote) | ₹12,000, promo hosting and domain inside | Hosting ₹3,468–5,388 + .in ₹625–899, plus plugins and any maintenance |
| "Custom design" on a theme (₹45k) | ₹45,000 | Same hosting and domain + theme and builder licences |
| Custom build with AMC (₹1.5L) | ₹1,50,000 incl. 12 months' AMC | Hosting (₹19,188 on Cloud Startup) + domain + AMC renewal |
| Shopify store (Basic) | ₹1,499/mo billed yearly, plus fees on each sale | Same every year. Stop paying and the store goes offline |
| Cybiqon hand-coded site | From ₹9,999 one-time, first year of hosting included | Hosting and domain roughly ₹4,000–6,000, paid direct to the provider |
Website maintenance cost per year in India is the line that varies most. Mayank Digital Labs publishes ₹2,000–10,000 a month. If you want maintenance, get a monthly figure in writing and a list of what it covers.
What would change these numbers in 2027: a new Hostinger promo (two of its promo rates moved between September and October), a change in the .IN Registry tariff, or a GST rate change. None has been announced as of 28 Oct 2026.
Website cost calculator India: run your own quotes through it
Doing this by hand for three quotes is tedious, so we built a free website cost calculator that does the sum. Pick what you're building and a horizon of one, three or five years. Then add your own quote: the build price and what it says you'll pay each year. It puts the build price next to "everything else" over the period, which is the number that actually decides which quote is cheaper.
Run all three of your quotes through it. If one of them can't tell you its yearly figure, that's your first question for that vendor.
Is a WordPress theme site cheaper than a custom-coded website?
On year-two hosting, not much separates them. The difference is what the maintenance is for. A theme site is WordPress core plus a theme plus a stack of plugins, and every plugin is one more thing that needs patching. So when a ₹12,000 quote says "we'll maintain it", that's a monthly security job, whether or not anyone is paying for it.
A theme is a sensible choice if your coaching institute's staff post updates daily and someone is paid to keep the plugins current. A hand-coded site has no theme or builder licence to renew and ships only the code your business needs. It still needs hosting and someone who can change the text, but the plugin treadmill goes away. We've laid out the speed, security and editing trade-offs in WordPress vs a custom-coded website.
The SSL line in your quote: 200 days now, 100 days from 15 Mar 2027
Two page-one cost guides dated April 2026 still list SSL at "₹2,500–10,000 a year" or "about ₹5,000 a year". That product no longer exists in that form.
Under the CA/Browser Forum's Ballot SC081, a public SSL/TLS certificate can be valid for at most:
- 200 days from 15 Mar 2026
- 100 days from 15 Mar 2027
- 47 days from 15 Mar 2029
Let's Encrypt, the free authority most hosts use, is shortening its own to 64 days by default from 10 Feb 2027 and 45 days from 16 Feb 2028. Those renew themselves through the hosting, so you do nothing.
So a paid "1-year SSL" line can't be what it says. At best it's a subscription that someone has to reissue and reinstall at least twice a year now, and more often from March 2027. For a business website, a free auto-renewing certificate does the job. The question for all three vendors is simple: "Does SSL renew automatically, and who is responsible if it doesn't?" More on this in our post on the 200-day SSL renewal change.
Ecommerce website cost in India: Shopify pricing and fees on every sale
If the showroom or distributor wants to take orders online, the maths changes. It becomes a monthly bill plus a cut of every sale.
Shopify India pricing, checked 28 Oct 2026:
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Shopify fee per sale (third-party gateway) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ₹1,499/mo | ₹1,994/mo | 2% |
| Grow | ₹5,599/mo | ₹7,447/mo | 1% |
| Advanced | ₹22,680/mo | ₹30,164/mo | 0.6% |
| Plus | from ₹1,75,000/mo | 0.2% |
There's a 3-day free trial, then ₹20 a month for three months. Shopify Payments isn't available in India, so every Indian store uses a third-party gateway and pays that per-sale fee, as Razorpay's 8 Jul 2026 post explains. That sits on top of the gateway's own charge, which is a standard 2% + GST for Razorpay.
As an illustration, a Basic store selling ₹5 lakh a month would pay roughly ₹10,000 to Shopify, ₹10,000 to Razorpay and ₹1,800 GST on Razorpay's fee. That's about ₹21,800 a month before the ₹1,499 plan. Payment gateway charges vary by provider, and our guide to choosing an online store builder compares the platforms.
Who owns what: the domain, the hosting login and the code
This is the question almost no quote answers, and it decides whether you can ever leave.
- Domain: register it in your name or your business's name, with the login in your email. For .in, the registry now requires registrant e-KYC through DigiLocker or Aadhaar, and unverified domains are suspended. If the freelancer verifies it with their KYC, it's legally their domain. That's how owners end up with a developer not giving website access back.
- Hosting account: hold the login and pay the provider directly, so the renewal reminder reaches you and not someone who changed their number.
- Code: for a custom build, the contract should say the source code and repository transfer to you on handover. For a theme site, ask whose account bought the theme and plugin licences.
- Platform sites: on Shopify or a website builder, the site runs only while the subscription does.
A website also isn't the same as being found. Local search is its own job, and it explains why a competitor shows up on Google and you don't, sometimes with a worse site.
Eight questions to ask every website vendor before you sign
Send the same list to all three vendors and put the answers side by side:
- Is this a theme, a page builder, or code written for my business?
- What will I pay in year two, line by line: hosting, domain, licences, maintenance?
- Is the hosting price a promo rate? What does it renew at?
- Whose name, email and e-KYC will the domain be registered under?
- Will I hold the hosting login and pay the provider directly?
- Do I get the source code and repository on handover, in writing?
- Does SSL renew automatically, and who fixes it if it doesn't?
- Is your quote inclusive of GST or "plus GST"?
A vendor who answers all eight clearly is worth more than the cheapest number on the table.
FAQs
What is the average website development cost in India?
There isn't a reliable average, only bands agencies publish: roughly ₹15,000–50,000 for a basic 5–10 page site (Mayank Digital Labs), ₹30,000–80,000 (Zethic), or ₹50,000–1,50,000 for an agency-built business site (Hostinger's tutorial). What matters is year one plus every year after.
What is the yearly cost of maintaining a website in India?
At minimum, hosting and domain renewal. On Hostinger India shared hosting renews at ₹3,468–7,788 a year, and a .in domain at ₹625–899 a year depending on the registrar (as of 28 Oct 2026). Add theme or plugin licences if you have them, and a maintenance contract if you want one.
Should I hire a freelancer or an agency for my website?
Hostinger's tutorial puts freelancers at ₹10,000–1,00,000 and agency business sites at ₹50,000–1,50,000. Price matters less than two things: whether they'll still answer the phone in year two, and whether the domain, hosting and code are in your name in writing. Ask both the eight questions above.
How long does website development take?
It depends on pages, features and how quickly you supply the text and photos. Cybiqon publishes 2–3 weeks for a standard business site; a store or custom features are scoped separately. Whoever you hire, get the go-live date and your own deadlines in writing.
Is GST charged on website development, hosting and domains?
Yes, 18%: SAC 998314 for development and 998315 for hosting, unchanged by the 22 Sep 2025 rate rationalisation, according to Busy's IT-services GST table (updated 19 Oct 2026) and Tally Solutions' GST guide. A ₹45,000 quote "plus GST" is ₹53,100, so two quotes ₹8,000 apart can be level once one is inclusive and the other isn't. Domain India adds 18% on top; Hostinger's page doesn't say.
Do I need e-KYC for my .in domain?
Yes. The .IN Registry requires the registrant to be verified, through DigiLocker or Aadhaar, and suspends unverified domains. Make sure it's done in your name or your business's, not your developer's.
What Cybiqon would build for you
If what you need is a website that brings in enquiries rather than a store or an app, Cybiqon builds custom websites written for your business, not a theme with your logo dropped in: hand-coded, mobile-first, with a WhatsApp button and forms wired to where you already read messages. It starts at ₹9,999 one-time and goes live in 2–3 weeks, with the first year of hosting included. After that, hosting and domain run roughly ₹4,000–6,000 a year, paid directly to the provider with no markup. On handover you get 100% of the source code, the repository, the domain and the server credentials.
Put your quotes through the calculator first. Then send them to support@cybiqon.in, call +91 9250711473 or book a 30-minute call, and we'll go through them line by line with you, whoever you end up hiring.
Conclusion
Website development cost in India isn't the number on the quote. It's year one plus every year after, plus who holds the keys. Put your quotes through the decoded table and the calculator: what's included, what renews and at what rupee figure, whether GST is in it, and whose name the domain sits under. Ask all eight questions. Once the quotes are compared like for like, the right one is usually obvious. If you'd like a second pair of eyes, Cybiqon is happy to look.
