Shiprocket Weight Discrepancy: How to Dispute It Within 7 Days

Every Thursday a new batch of Shiprocket weight discrepancy charges lands in your Billing tab. If nobody opens it, they get accepted automatically. Shiprocket's own weight dispute page says that if a seller does not respond within the window, the charge is auto-accepted and debited from the wallet. After that you can't dispute it.

Volumes are rising, so this matters more each quarter. Delhivery reported a record 325 million express parcels in July–September 2026, up 32% year on year, in its Q2 FY27 results on 30 October 2026. Redseer projected USD 15–16 billion of festive online GMV and 180–185 million shoppers for 2026. Every one of those parcels is re-weighed and re-measured at a hub by machine. Some of the readings will disagree with what you declared.

This guide is for the owner or ops person at a D2C brand, or a Shopify or WooCommerce seller, shipping somewhere between 300 and 5,000 parcels a month. It covers:

  • why billed weight differs from packed weight
  • how to tell a real volumetric charge from a wrong one
  • the exact dispute steps on Shiprocket and Delhivery One
  • the free fixes that stop most charges from happening
  • when it is worth building your own checker

What is a Shiprocket weight discrepancy, and why is billed weight different from packed weight?

A weight discrepancy happens when the courier's hub records a higher chargeable weight than the one you entered at shipment creation. Shiprocket then recovers the freight difference from your wallet.

The courier does not bill on what the scale says. It bills on the higher of two numbers:

  • Dead weight: the packed parcel on a scale, including the box, filler, tape and invoice pouch.
  • Volumetric weight: the space the parcel takes up in the truck, calculated as L × B × H (in cm) ÷ 5000, the divisor on Shiprocket's weight dispute management page.

Shiprocket's own blog (December 2025) notes that the 5000 divisor can vary by courier, so check the rate card for each courier partner you use.

Here is a worked example. A 30 × 25 × 15 cm box holding a 700 g bottle of serum has a volumetric weight of 11,250 ÷ 5000 = 2.25 kg. If you declared 0.7 kg, the hub will bill around 2.25 kg, and the charge is correct.

The usual reasons the hub's numbers come out higher than yours:

  1. Polybag bulge. A soft mailer stuffed with a hoodie measures much bigger than the flat dimensions you entered.
  2. A bigger box swapped in. The 20 × 15 × 10 box ran out, so the packer used the 30 × 25 × 15 one, and nobody updated the order.
  3. Product weight entered instead of packed weight. The catalogue says 450 g for the product, the box and filler add 180 g, and the parcel crosses into the next slab.

WareIQ, a logistics vendor, estimates that 5–20% of shipments in Indian ecommerce see some weight discrepancy. It also says a SKU that moves from the 500 g slab into the 1–2 kg band can cost 2–3 times as much to ship. Treat those figures as a vendor's estimate, not a measurement. Even so, at the low end of that range, a brand shipping 2,000 parcels a month would see about 100 flagged parcels.

Is a Shiprocket weight discrepancy fake? How to tell a real charge from a wrong one

Google autocomplete suggests "shiprocket fake weight discrepancy", which tells you how many sellers suspect it. Some of those suspicions are justified. Many are not. Most charges are ordinary volumetric charges that the seller never worked out in advance.

Sellers have published cases that look wrong. On TechEnclave in March 2026, sellers described packs under 500 g being billed at 1–2 kg. One said they added a 200–300 g buffer to every declaration and were still charged. Another said the proof photo showed a different parcel from the one they had shipped. In a Shopify app review (mirrored on AppNavigator) dated 10 October 2026, the brand Famnest reported 74 excess-weight deductions totalling ₹12,472.99 between 1 and 8 October, which left its wallet at −₹11,293.53. These are individual seller reports, not audited figures, but they show what a bad week can look like.

Before you dispute, sort every charge into one of two groups:

Signal Probably real Probably wrong, so dispute it
Parcel type A rigid box near the billed dimensions An envelope or flat mailer billed at 1–2 kg
Your own numbers L×B×H/5000 is close to the billed weight Your packed weight and your volumetric weight are both well under the billed weight
Proof photo Shows your box and your label Shows a different parcel, a different box size, or no readable scale
Pattern One-off, on a SKU packed in mixed boxes The same SKU, always packed in the same box, billed differently week to week

The rule is simple. Work out the volumetric weight yourself before you get angry. If your arithmetic agrees with the courier, the fix is your packaging, not a dispute. If your arithmetic and your photos disagree with the courier, raise the dispute and send the evidence.

Where Shiprocket weight discrepancy charges show up, and how long you have

Discrepancies appear in Billing > Weight Reconciliation on the Shiprocket panel. Shiprocket's weight-management FAQ treats Thursday as day 0, the day the discrepancy is posted.

From there the clock is short. If you take no action within 7 days of the discrepancy date, Shiprocket auto-accepts the charge and debits it from your wallet. Once that happens you can no longer dispute it.

Shiprocket's own pages do not fully agree. The SOP says "7 days" and the weight dispute management page says "7 working days". Plan on 7 calendar days. If you act inside the shorter reading, you are safe under either one. In practice: a discrepancy posted on Thursday should be disputed by the following Wednesday.

Two things to know about the money:

  • While a dispute is open, the amount is held separately from your usable wallet balance (per Shiprocket's weight dispute management page). Your wallet can look healthier than it really is.
  • A negative wallet can hold up COD remittance. This comes from a 2021 internal Shiprocket note and may have changed since. If the Famnest numbers above are typical of a bad week, a negative balance is not hypothetical.

On Amazon Easy Ship, Amazon seller-forum moderators have cited a 45 calendar day window. That figure comes from forum replies, not from Amazon's official help page, so confirm it in Seller Central before you rely on it.

How to dispute a Shiprocket weight discrepancy, step by step

Open Billing > Weight Reconciliation, find the AWB, and raise a dispute. Shiprocket's SOP lists what the form needs:

  1. 4–5 mandatory images, showing a measuring scale against the length, breadth and height, plus the dead weight on a weighing scale.
  2. Product category and subcategory. These must match the order, or the dispute can be rejected on a mismatch.
  3. Remarks explaining why the charge is wrong, for example "packed in a 20×15×10 cm box, 0.48 kg packed; billed 1.5 kg".
  4. Product URL for the item.

Rules that decide whether you win:

  • Measure after packing, not the empty box. A photo of an empty carton proves nothing about the parcel that shipped.
  • Add package images at shipment creation. Shiprocket lets you attach them when you create the order, so the evidence exists before any dispute does.
  • Keep the AWB visible in the photo if you can. Shiprocket doesn't list this as a rule, but it ties the image to the parcel, which matters most when the courier's photo shows a different one.
  • One dispute per order. You get one attempt, so send the full evidence the first time.

Resolution time is stated as 5, 5–6 or 5–7 working days, depending on which Shiprocket page you read. Assume up to 7 working days.

If the dispute is rejected, escalate quickly. The SOP gives 2 working days and the FAQ says 48 hours. Use the shorter one. After that, the documented escalation address is weights@shiprocket.com. Include the AWB, your images and your arithmetic in one email.

How to raise a weight dispute on Delhivery One

If you ship directly through Delhivery One rather than through an aggregator, the path is Disputes > Weight Mismatch > select the AWB > Raise a Claim. Delhivery's help page says claims can be raised on delivered shipments only.

The evidence it asks for:

  • your claimed weight in grams
  • length, breadth and height in cm
  • package images captured at dispatch

On the divisor, Delhivery's two pages say different things. Its volumetric-weight help page uses 5000 for both Surface and Express. It says shipments under 1 kg are charged on dead weight only, and parcels packed in flyers are charged on dead weight up to 1 kg. Its weight-dispute page, however, refers to a divisor of "4000 or 5000". Check the divisor on your own rate card and argue from that number.

The flyer rule is worth acting on. If you sell apparel, accessories or anything light and non-fragile, shipping qualifying orders in poly flyers can take those orders out of volumetric billing altogether on Delhivery, according to its help page.

Free fixes that prevent weight discrepancy charges

A dispute only gets back money you have already lost. These steps stop the charges before they happen, roughly in order of payoff:

  1. A fixed box per SKU. Decide one carton or mailer size for each SKU and write it on the packing-desk chart. That takes away the "bigger box swapped in" cause.
  2. Packed volumetric weight at manifest. Enter each SKU's packed weight and its box L×B×H in the catalogue, so every order starts with numbers you can defend.
  3. Weigh and photograph every parcel before pickup. A bench scale, a tape measure and a phone at the packing desk produce your dispute evidence as a by-product of packing.
  4. Weight Freeze on Shiprocket. Freezing locks a product's weight and dimensions. According to Shiprocket's weight-management FAQ, weight billing averages 21 days without a freeze and about 4 days with one. You need 1 product image and 5 package images, and approval takes up to 72 working hours. It is likelier to be approved with 20+ shipments of the product and a dispute rate under 10%. You lose the freeze if you change the product name or HSN, switch to a bigger box, or change the price by more than 25%.
  5. A weekly Thursday or Friday check of the Weight Reconciliation tab, owned by one named person and put in the calendar. This step alone stops charges being auto-accepted unseen.

Weight debits are one slice of shipping leakage. The bigger one for most D2C brands is returns, and our guide on how to reduce RTO in ecommerce covers that side. If couriers are also marking parcels "customer unavailable" without trying, see spotting a fake delivery attempt.

Does the Legal Metrology Act apply to courier weighing scales?

In short, yes. Scales used to bill by weight fall under the Legal Metrology Act. According to a summary by the law firm S.S. Rana, weights and measures used in transactions must be verified and stamped under Section 24. State legal metrology departments have taken enforcement action against unverified scales at courier counters and post offices.

What it does not do is win a Shiprocket dispute. The dispute process runs on your images and the courier's records, not on a stamping certificate. Think of Legal Metrology as background: it is useful if you find a hub systematically over-weighing, but it doesn't replace the 7-day routine.

Can you take a courier to consumer court over weight charges?

Probably not, and here is why. Section 2(7) of the Consumer Protection Act 2019 excludes services availed for a commercial purpose. In Shriram Chits v Raghachand Associates (Supreme Court, 2024), the court held that the service provider bears the burden of proving the service was used for a commercial purpose. That helps some complainants. But a D2C brand shipping customer orders is plainly using the courier commercially, so the outcome is uncertain at best.

Use the platform's escalation path first: the dispute, then the escalation, then weights@shiprocket.com. Talk to a lawyer before you file anywhere.

When is it worth building your own weight discrepancy checker?

Say you ship 300 parcels a month. A person with a spreadsheet can probably clear the Thursday batch in well under an hour. At 3,000, the batch is long enough that checks get skipped, and a skipped week means charges accepted unseen.

That is when a small, owned checker pays its way. This is the kind of AI agent Cybiqon builds. It would:

  • Pull the weekly weight-reconciliation export from Shiprocket (and Delhivery One, if you use it) every Thursday.
  • Match each flagged AWB against the weight, dimensions and photos recorded at your packing desk.
  • Flag the mismatches that look wrong (envelope at 2 kg, packed weight far below billed) while the 7-day window is still open, and leave genuine volumetric charges alone.
  • Draft each dispute with the right images, category and remarks attached, for a person to approve and submit.
  • Keep a running total by courier and SKU, so you can see which SKUs need a new box and which courier's hub keeps disagreeing with you.

The agent shouldn't be the one that submits disputes. A person approves each one, because a weak dispute uses up your one attempt on that order. This is the same kind of reconciliation as matching marketplace payouts; our guide to Amazon and Flipkart seller reconciliation covers that side.

A spreadsheet and the routine are enough when…

Be honest with yourself before you build anything. You do not need a checker if:

  • you ship under roughly 500 parcels a month and the Thursday check takes less than half an hour
  • most SKUs are on Weight Freeze and your dispute rate is low
  • your catalogue already holds packed weight and box dimensions for every SKU
  • one person reliably does the weekly check, and nothing has been auto-accepted in the last few cycles

If all four are true, the free fixes are your answer.

FAQs

How many days do I have to dispute a Shiprocket weight discrepancy?

Shiprocket's pages say "7 days" in some places and "7 working days" in others, counted from the discrepancy date (Thursday is day 0). Plan on 7 calendar days. After that, the charge is auto-accepted, debited from your wallet and can no longer be disputed.

What images does Shiprocket need for a weight dispute?

4–5 images showing a measuring scale against the length, breadth and height of the packed parcel, plus the dead weight on a weighing scale. You also need the product category and subcategory (matching the order), remarks and the product URL.

How is volumetric weight calculated for weight discrepancy charges?

Length × breadth × height in centimetres, divided by 5000 on Shiprocket's page. Delhivery's pages mention 5000 and "4000 or 5000", so check your rate card. You are billed on whichever is higher, dead weight or volumetric weight.

What happens if Shiprocket rejects my weight dispute?

Escalate within 2 working days (per the SOP) or 48 hours (per the FAQ); use the shorter one. If that fails, email weights@shiprocket.com with the AWB, images and your calculation.

Does Weight Freeze stop Shiprocket weight discrepancy charges?

It reduces them a lot for frozen products. You need 1 product image and 5 package images, and approval takes up to 72 working hours. The freeze is lost if you change the product name or HSN, use a bigger box, or change the price by more than 25%.

Conclusion

A Shiprocket weight discrepancy is usually a volumetric charge you didn't calculate, and sometimes a wrong reading you can fight. Either way, the 7-day window decides the outcome. Check Billing > Weight Reconciliation every Thursday or Friday, and do your own L×B×H/5000 arithmetic before you dispute. Then dispute the real errors with packed-parcel photos, and fix the cause with fixed boxes, packed weights and Weight Freeze. If the weekly check has outgrown a spreadsheet, send Cybiqon your last cycle's count and we'll tell you whether a checker is worth it.
